The Mid-Year Check-In: Why It’s Crucial for Team Success

Writer's picture: Troy BTroy B

I recently spoke with a senior leader who, when asked about how her team were performing admitted, "I know how individuals on the team are doing, but I haven't really considered the team as a whole since our offsite in January!" This "set and forget" approach to team development is common but problematic. Setting goals at the beginning of the year and hoping for the best is not enough.

As we approach the half-way mark of the year, it's an excellent time for leaders to step back and assess how their teams are progressing. Mid-year check-ins are not just for individuals; they are a valuable opportunity to ensure everyone is aligned with where the team is going, there is team cohesion and the team is on track to achieve superb results.

So dust off that team charter, and lets look at the key elements to review at mid-year:

External Perspective:

  • Are stakeholders' needs being met?

  • Is the team clear on stakeholder expectations?

  • Do the team’s objectives align with broader strategic goals?

  • How healthy is the team's relationship with stakeholders?

Internal Perspective:

  • Are team members aligned with the team's purpose?

  • Is the team on track to achieve its objectives?

  • Is the team operating as planned?

  • Is the team culture safe, inclusive, and cohesive?

Future Focus: Reinforce what's working by celebrating successes. Recalibrate as needed. Reflecting on progress and identifying areas for improvement keeps the team dynamic and on course towards their goals.

Conclusion

Mid-year check-ins are more than just a progress report; they are a vital part of effective teaming. They provide a chance to recalibrate, motivate, and align your team towards success. So, as you reach this midpoint of the year, take the time to check in with your team. Your effort will pay off in the form of a more engaged, productive, and cohesive team.
